Local InformationGreece is blue seas, blue skies, scattered islands white washed houses and friendly people. But Greece is much, much more. Soaring mountains, quiet roads, beautiful scenery, rare birds, abundant wild flowers, sunshine, good food, and fascinating historical sites. The Peloponnese in southern Greece, has all of these things and Porto Heli, just two and half hours from Athens, is the ideal base from which to sample them. There are many lovely houses there, tucked away in the hills or by the sea. Be assured that we’ve chosen some of the best of them for your holiday accommodation. The lively, friendly village of Porto Heli embraces two truly beautiful bays, it encompasses the seemingly endless beaches at Ververonda, sandy bays in Hinitsa and Limenakia as well as the myriad of coves and bays at Kosta and St. Emilion that face the islands of Spetses and Hydra. The village itself has a wide choice of restaurants, tavernas, bars and nightlife. One of the nice things about the area is that you can choose to join the bustle in the village or relax in a quiet beachside taverna. You can play beach volley, ski, sail windsurf and wakeboard. Or find a nice quiet cove to relax on your own. The excellent climate makes it a year round resort. Restaurants and tavernas are generally of a very high standard serving mostly local produce picked or caught the same day and served up with a salad and a bottle of wine. Pizza and souvlakia are available for fast food addicts. Delicacies worth trying are fresh anchovies, crisply fried or marinated in herbs and lemon, charcoal grilled octopus, deep fried squid, delicately coloured red mullet or a giant grilled fish. Local lamb tightly wrapped in paper with herbs and fresh vegetables then baked in the oven will revive the most jaded appetite. A wide variety of vegetables and salads is an essential part of the Greek diet. A few years ago it was hard to find an alternative to the local retsina, that you either love or hate. There has been a revolution in wine production and there is now a wide selection of excellent wines at very reasonable prices. Each area around Porto Heli has its own special character and our properties, all privately owned, vary from luxurious to simple, whether with a pool, by the sea or in the hills they combine character and location for a comfortable and relaxing holiday. Some are close to the village centre and sports facilities but most of them are a few minutes drive from shops and tavernas but never more than a few minutes from the sea. Many people like to do some exploring while on holiday and if you want to stay close the sea there is an abundance of islands to visit. You can start with the popular whitewashed island of Spetses, 10 minutes by small boat from the mainland. Followed by a visit to Hydra, an artist’s traffic free paradise, or drive up the coast through the lemon groves to Poros. The intriguing walled city of Monemvassia, though not strictly an island, is well worth a visit. It is reached after a peaceful 3 hour journey by excursion boat along the Peloponnese coast. It is essential to sample inland Greece. It has a mystical beauty emphasized by the constantly changing light and colours in the mountains. The Olympic games in 2004 were a wonderful experience for visitors from all over the world and they are an excellent reason for making a long days excursion over the mountains of the central Peloponnese to the lovely site of the original games. Easier to reach is the theatre at Epidaurus famed for it’s perfect acoustics. Live performances are still held in the summer months. Epidaurus can be combined with a visit to the medieval town of Nafplion the first capital city of Greece, then on to the ancient site of Agamemnon’s Mycenae, one of the first kingdom’s in Greece. The Byzantine complex of churches and palaces at Mystra apart from the wonderful architecture is worth visiting in the spring for the profusion of wild flowers alone. When you don’t want to exhaust yourself too much, then just stay in Porto Heli where in the surrounding area you find lovely walks, hidden gorges and ancient sites all within a short drive. We at Haleies Travel want you to enjoy and remember your holiday. For this reason our company policy is to be as flexible as possible.
